The Ministry of Sports has pledged full support for Kenya’s Football Grannies as they gear up for their debut international appearance at the Beka Tournament in South Africa, scheduled from April 2 to 5, 2025.

Hailing from Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, the team—fondly known as Mutei FC—has captured national attention since its founding last year. Composed of women aged 52 to 75, the Football Grannies are challenging age stereotypes in sports and promoting active, healthy living among elderly women in their communities.

On Friday evening, Principal Secretary for Sports, Peter Tum, attended an exhibition match at Mutei Primary School in Uasin Gishu County. He praised the team for their role in community transformation through sport and for breaking age-related barriers. PS Tum also pledged the government’s full support for their training and travel to South Africa.

“Mutei Grannies FC’s story is an inspiration to all generations. True champions are not defined by age, but by their heart. Congratulations and keep inspiring the next generation of athletes,” said Tum.
“As they prepare for this important international engagement, the government is committed to supporting their journey, aligned with President William Ruto’s vision of leveraging sports for social and economic transformation.”

During the event, he presented the team with their official registration certificate and playing kits.

Team patron Elizabeth Keitany expressed deep appreciation for the Ministry’s backing, which includes formal recognition, sports gear, and full facilitation for their international outing.

“We never imagined how impactful this would become within our communities,” said Keitany.
“Traveling to South Africa is a dream realized for many of these women—proof that talent and passion have no age limit.”

The Kenyan contingent will comprise 22 players and 8 officials.

Team captain Gertrude Kipyegon reflected on the group’s journey with emotion and pride.

“Many doubted us at the beginning—some thought it was a waste of time. But we thank God, because now we see the light. It’s finally sinking in that we’re headed for greater things,” she shared.

The Mama Beka GIFT Tournament is hosted by the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation in partnership with Vakhegula Vakhegula Football Club, and will be held in Nkowankowa, Limpopo. The event brings together 32 teams from around the world, including participants from Kenya, the USA, France, Togo, Zambia, Mozambique, Ghana, and Zimbabwe. The inaugural grannies’ football tournament was held in 2023.
