In a historic milestone for Kenyan sports, Mutei Grannies FC—a spirited team of grandmothers aged between 50 and 75 from Elgeyo Marakwet—is set to represent the country at the Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) in Limpopo, South Africa, from April 2 to 5.

What started as a simple community fitness initiative has grown into a powerful movement, reshaping perceptions of sports, aging, and wellness among older women.

In recognition of their inspiring journey, the Kenyan government has stepped in to sponsor the team, ensuring their smooth and dignified participation on the global stage.

Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum and Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii have both pledged unwavering support for the team, aligning with President William Ruto’s BETA agenda, which positions sports as a key driver of social and economic transformation.

“Mutei Grannies FC’s story is an inspiration to all generations. True champions are not defined by age, but by heart,” said PS Tum.
“As the team prepares for South Africa, the government remains fully committed to supporting their journey.”

The traveling squad includes 22 players and eight officials, among them 75-year-old Rebecca Cheboi, the team’s oldest member, who stood proudly during the official ceremony.

But their influence goes far beyond the pitch. Since its founding last year, Mutei Grannies FC has become a force for positive change in Elgeyo Marakwet—helping members overcome challenges such as alcoholism, strengthening social ties, and empowering older women to live healthier, more connected lives.

Their incredible story has captured the hearts of Kenyans nationwide, proving that passion, purpose, and perseverance know no age limits.

As they lace up their boots for the international stage, these grandmothers aren’t just playing football—they’re making history.
