Empowering Kenya's Senior Citizens Through Sport
From a single county initiative to a national sports federation recognized under the Kenya Sports Act — transforming active ageing, health, and dignity.
From a single county initiative to a national sports federation recognized under the Kenya Sports Act — transforming active ageing, health, and dignity.
The Kenya Grannies (Masters) Football Federation (KGFF) was born from a visionary idea by Dr. Elizabeth J. Keitany, a passionate advocate for healthy aging and community wellness. As a community mobilizer, Dr. Keitany witnessed firsthand the rising health challenges facing older adults, especially women—many of whom were battling lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and depression due to physical inactivity and social isolation.
Inspired by the power of sports to transform lives, she envisioned a movement where elderly women and men could stay active, engaged, and empowered through football—a sport traditionally seen as youth-centered. What started as a small group of grannies coming together for fun and exercise quickly gained attention for its unique approach to promoting health and happiness in later life.
The first official team of "granny footballers" was formed in Elgeyo Marakwet County, with women aged 50 and above donning football kits, lacing up their boots, and stepping onto the pitch with energy, pride, and purpose. Their enthusiasm defied stereotypes and inspired people across Kenya—and beyond.
Recognizing the power of this grassroots movement, Kenya Grannies (Masters) Football Federation was formally established to provide structure, support, and growth. The Federation now works with multiple counties, partners with health and sports stakeholders, and organizes inter-county matches, training camps, health check-ups, and tournaments tailored for older adults.
Over the years, KGFF has become a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and healthy aging, breaking cultural barriers and showcasing that fitness, friendship, and fun have no age limit. The federation continues to grow, aiming to expand nationally and regionally, transforming lives one game at a time.
